This is a visual arts exhibition dedicated to exploring the intersections between ethnicity, financial security, and pension protection. It is the first public exhibition as part of our 3-year academic project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council’s Inclusive Ageing initiative, titled ‘Promoting inclusivity in pension protection and other forms of saving among men and women from black and minority ethnic communities in the UK: a mixed methods study’.

Exhibition closed for Easter Break 29/3/24–4/4/24. Moving Colour is a multi-disciplinary group exhibition exploring phenomenological qualities in formal aspects of colour. The idea of static colour and pattern conveying emotional space is not new, and yet artists to this day are mystified by the Rubik’s cube of the proposition. Each artist’s work in this exhibition demonstrates a unique explorative path to capture the seemingly moving magic of colour.

This opportunity is available to students at both Masters and Undergraduate levels. This is an opportunity to work in interdisciplinary teams to produce a series of outcomes for the client that encompasses marketing, business, art, gaming, communication and design.

BBC South recently came to the E-textile Innovation Lab to discuss and showcase a prototype electronic glove that enables movement in paralysed hands is potentially "life-changing", stroke patients have said. Developed at the University of Southampton using Winchester School of Art's equipment, it is intended to help people regain muscle strength and function.

The Critical Infrastructures and Image Politics (CIIP) research group is pleased to invite you all to a guest lecture by artist Arjan Guerrero who works with automating, augmenting, and interactive media.

In this talk, Prof Gabriele Budach proposes stop motion animation and the cooperative creation of short animated films as a starting point for addressing the question of how we can overcome divisions created by language, language policies, and linguistic imperialism, while continuing to use these very same means of communication.

This inaugural event marks the launch of Critical Infrastructures and Image Politics Research (CIIP) research group at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, and is the first event in the collaboration with Centre for the Study of the Networked Image (CSNI, London South Bank University) and Digital Aesthetics Research Group (DARC, Aarhus University).

Winchester School of Art is pleased to present the First Year Art Exhibition, featuring work from MA Fine Art students, opening at 4pm on Thursday 7th in the Westside Foyer.

A transformative, five-day workshop that delves into the art of creative Japanese cutting. Under the umbrella of MAISON MAFD, students worked as a collective design house to push the boundaries of traditional garment cutting, resulting in an inspiring collection that reflects both innovation and craftsmanship.

This winter, 'Case Studies' will highlight three WSA staff members, each employing 3D printing in some form or other within their creative process. Come spring, students will be invited to submit proposals exploring 3D printing in their own practice.

The Critical Infrastructures and Image Politics (CIIP) research group is pleased to invite you all to a guest lecture by artist and researcher Wesley Goatley, whose work examines Artificial Intelligence technologies and their relations to society, geopolitics, and the climate crisis, and how art practice can intervene and explore these tools and topics.

More than a century ago, Marcel Duchamp celebrated ordinary objects by putting them on pedestals in galleries. His playful engagement with the ‘museum effect’ — the extraordinary attention we’re expected to pay any object placed in an art gallery — suggested that art is an act of heightened awareness. In ‘Ordinary Things’, twenty-six artists at WSA transform everyday objects into complex meditations on what it means to be in the world.

UKFT’s MADE IT programme has been developed to enrich the production and sourcing knowledge of fashion design and textile design graduates and to illustrate the wealth of technical and creative roles available throughout the UK supply chain. This is a unique programme only available to the handful of UKFT member universities.

This event presents a performative, participatory approach to public engagement in fluvial ecologies through artistic practice. Participants will be introduced to the Island of the Day Before project, followed by an outdoor tour of the surrounding Itchen River and Winnall Moors.

Nick Stewart asks questions about place, identity, archives and film, in the context of recent Irish history. Over the past 25 years, this had led to a body of work in video, two artist’s books, and a new feature film project, Children of the North. Taking a deep- dive into the media archives of the conflict in N Ireland, a conflict within which Stewart was embedded for most of his life.

SALT+SHAW (Paul Salt and Susan Shaw) have been producing artists’ books in collaboration since 2002. ‘Taking A Journey’ celebrates twenty-one years of making in twenty-one books, with objects and supporting items also on display, to reflect influences, ideas and the process of making.

Databites: What can we see in the background of a video conference call? The daily practices of changing, concealing or performing the background for video conferencing reveal a symptomatic landscape of immaterial labour that records the changes in contemporary working conditions. Winchester School of Art is pleased to present Half Full, an Interim Show showcasing the work of students on the MA Fine Art & MA Communication Design programmes.

Democratic Futures launches with a sequence of motion pieces across Winchester School of Art’s campus, providing an overview of work that was produced by BA Graphic Arts students in response to the brief Democratic Futures, set by the Parliamentary Archives. 

In this session, Dr Emma Reay and Dr Alexandra Anikina will share their recent work, followed by a conversation bridging these projects. The AMT talk will be in person in Lecture Theatre B.

On Wednesday, Kwame Phillips will be in conversation with Anna Angelhardt regarding their recent research. The AMT talk will be in person in Lecture Theatre B.

An exhibition curated by Fine Art Printmaking students exploring themes of collage and assemblage, fragmentation and reconstruction, with a broad focus on works on paper. Exhibition runs 28 April to 4 May in The Winchester Gallery and Westside Foyer. Viewing event this Thursday 27 April, 4-5pm.

The Library are pleased to announce that a new collection has been added to our Digital Library: WSA Prospectuses. The collection features over a century of inspiring cover design and WSA history with the earliest document in the collection dating back to 1910. The collection acts as a unique insight into the School’s heritage and constant evolution in visual language.
